In April, the Spring Cleaning Safe Medication Disposal Event, hosted by the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy in partnership with Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) and the Division of Public Safety & Security (DPSS), highlighted our ongoing commitment to community safety and environmental stewardship.
This initiative encourages members of the university community to take an active part in properly disposing of unused or expired medications, helping prevent misuse and reduce environmental impact.

Medications stored at home can pose serious risks, including accidental ingestion, intentional misuse, and environmental contamination. By offering a secure and accessible disposal option, this event helps protect both public health and the environment.
A key factor in this year’s success was the expertise of the EHS-Hazardous Materials Management (EHS-HMM) team. Their oversight of the collection and disposal process ensured full compliance with safety and environmental regulations. Thanks to their efforts, approximately 700 pounds of pharmaceuticals were responsibly removed from circulation.
The event also highlighted the strength of cross-departmental collaboration and the critical contributions of Facilities & Operations in maintaining the health and safety of our campus and community.
From logistical planning to the safe handling of hazardous materials, each team applied specialized expertise that helped ensure the event’s success and our shared commitment to a healthier, more sustainable university environment.
If you missed this event, another Safe Medication and Sharps Disposal Event will be held in September. For details, visit the Safe Medication and Sharps Disposal event page.
