Streamlined process brings on new custodians quickly

To support the university’s public health-informed fall semester, Custodial Services was tasked with providing significantly more cleaning and disinfection services in academic buildings and other areas across campus. Classrooms, public bathrooms, and common areas in particular now receive more frequent cleaning.

Recruiting, hiring, and training enough staff members to support this need in a very short timeframe is a major feat. F&O Human Resources and partners have risen to the challenge!

Mohamed Kaba applies for a custodial position with support from Divna Marinkovski of FOHR.

To hire as quickly as possible, FOHR streamlined the process. Following guidance from Environment, Health and Safety, the entire FOHR team and staff from F&O Training hosted socially distanced events that covered all the steps in just one day. They interviewed candidates, did onboarding paperwork, conducted initial training, and took photos for ID badges. In the past, these things would have been done in 4 separate locations throughout campus over the course of days or weeks.

Candidates were provided with masks and fresh pens, and interviews were staggered throughout the day to limit density in the Kipke Conference Center.

The new employees have already started, so you will see a lot of new faces helping with extra cleaning and sanitizing as well as regular custodial duties.

Overall, it was a creative approach that accomplished the goal while keeping public health and safety a priority!
