Around 1-2 times per year, U-M Transit Services is contacted by DPSS or the Ann Arbor Police Department to provide warming buses in response to a community incident.

In both January and February, the team stepped up to provide shelter for residents whose buildings experienced fires.

Emergency crews responded at 11:36 pm on Sunday, February 7 to a reported fire with heavy smoke at the Miller Manor Apartments. Around midnight, the Transit team received a call from DPSS. Transit quickly dispatched three buses to the scene after reviewing the night’s roster and nearby routes.

According to Jeff Knasiak, Transportation Supervisor who received the February phone call: “When we receive calls like this, drivers are very eager and willing to help out right away. Oftentimes, the request comes in at the end of a shift or past the shift. It is really nice to see how well our drivers come together to help the community.”

While fire crews responded at Miller Manor, the team provided warmth and shelter on board the buses for apartment residents—including residents with disabilities, wheelchairs, and pets.  

Transit Services has not only done an excellent job meeting the transportation needs of our campus, especially during this challenging pandemic year, but has extended itself to serve needs within the greater community.
